Have you ever found yourself working long hours, skipping lunch, and swapping personal time for late-night rendezvous with clients? Many of us make the mistake of believing we can achieve more by doubling our work efforts. So, we take on multiple projects and sacrifice personal time and our social lives to get ahead. And even though we accomplish everything on our list, we may find ourselves with very little to show for it in terms of life satisfaction and fulfillment.

Although I was first introduced to the 80/20 rule more than five years ago, it wasn’t until recently that I started applying it to my business and personal life. Also known as the Pareto principle, this concept suggests that 80 percent of our results come from 20 percent of our efforts. While you may be familiar with this philosophy in relation to time management and productivity, there’s a much more important question that one must also take into account: What are the activities that account for 80 percent of your happiness in your work life?

If you’re like most entrepreneurs, balancing your marketing efforts with the demands of running a business and dealing with clients can be a challenging endeavor.  You may find that despite your best intentions, marketing often falls by the wayside due to time and scheduling constraints.  However, the key to working smarter and not harder is effective time management, especially when marketing yourself on the Internet.

Here are four ways to maximize your time online and increase your overall business productivity.

Create a monthly marketing calendar.  Daily distractions are inevitable, so it’s wise to have a system in place to ensure your marketing efforts are consistent. To stay on track, develop a calendar documenting all of your weekly marketing activities for the month.  For instance, you might decide you’ll write content for your blog on Tuesdays and Thursdays and distribute your e-newsletter every other Monday.  Also, keep in mind your monthly objectives.  Let’s say you’d like to increase the number of newsletter or blog subscribers by 10 percent this month.  In order to reach that goal, you would first need to determine the necessary action steps such as connecting with “X” number of people every day or partnering with complementary Web sites.

Many small business owners are reluctant to enter the social media arena because while it is presents a wealth of online branding opportunities, it can be a bit overwhelming – not to mention time-consuming.  However, the key to successfully navigating the social media landscape is to develop a strategy for your marketing efforts.

Below, I’ve outlined a 3-step guide that will help you get the most out of your social media campaign, and show you how to effectively market your business on social networks in less than 30 minutes a day.

Define your goals for communication.
Before your start twittering or updating your Facebook status, assess what you hope to achieve.  You can start by examining your motives for engaging in conversation with your audience. Maybe it’s to increase brand awareness. Or perhaps, it’s to generate more Web site traffic.  Regardless of your objective, ask yourself: “What action do I want my target audience to take?”  Having distinctive goals will give you direction and provide the framework for your overall social media strategy.
