Insights from the Top 10 Women in Biotech 2012

November 9, 2012 By Susan Gunelius

NEWS AND INSIGHTS UPDATE:

The 2012 list of the top 10 women in biotech from FierceBiotech has been released and it features some amazing women who were identified through a nomination system by respected industry leaders as well as online nominations.

You can find out who made the 2012 list as well as some great insights from these inspirational women below:

Carrie Cox, CEO of Humacyte

“My approach has been to not really think about [being a woman in biopharma]. Just do the job, do a great job, and try and do an even better job tomorrow. Focus on adding value, and don’t worry too much about the next stage. Make sure you’re doing things that have an impact on other people.”

Dr. Michelle Dipp, CEO of OvaScience

“I usually give two pieces of advice. One is to be passionate about your work, because if you’re going to be successful, you’re going to work really hard. The second is to seek actionable feedback. I think that it’s important to not just hope that you’ll find a mentor but seek out advisers, both inside and outside of your company, who have been successful in translating new technologies into new therapies.”

Dr. Yvonne Greenstreet, Senior vice president of medicines development, Specialty Care, Pfizer

“When I decided to leave medicine and do an MBA I think a lot of people, my family particularly, were surprised by this and were not hugely enthusiastic, to be honest. But it’s what I wanted to do, so I did it. I think it was a really important experience for me that has been quite formative for me in my career. As I said, take on different opportunities. Have courage to follow what you believe is important.”

Sylvie Gregoire, President of Shire Human Genetic Therapies

“If you’re interested in the healthcare field and the pharma industry–bringing drugs to patients, and that’s the purpose of this industry–then any entry point is worth looking at.”

Linda Slanec Higgins, Vice president of biology, Gliead Sciences

“Find something you are passionate about, focus on the long view priorities, and don’t let any of the rest perturb your [path].”

Andrea Pfeifer, CEO of AC Immune

“I think it’s very important to have a long-term plan for the company. It’s not enough to say that we have the technology. You need to know what you’re going to do with the technology.”

Dr. Lynn Seely, Chief medical officer, Medivation

“Surround yourself with the best and brightest. That’s how you step up to the next level.”

Paula Brown Stafford, President of clinical development, Quintiles

“I wanted to make sure there was a culture at Quintiles so every woman who joined knew there was nothing there in their way.”

Deborah Tanner, Executive vice president and group president, R&D laboratories, Covance

“I spend a lot of time making sure that I’ve got the best people. If there’s one quality I look for in people it’s their ability to be resilient. Life is tough. This business is tough. If you have that resilience, it gives you confidence. Be a lifelong learner. You can take somebody who has no background in an area but if they have the ability to learn, and natural curiosity, it’s amazing what they can do.”

Anne Wojcicki, CEO and co-founder, 23andMe

“The advice that I offer to women and to men and to pretty much anyone is to find what you are passionate about, because when you are passionate about what you are doing it is seamless in your life. If they have a passion, they should follow it. Never do anything for the money and never do anything for the specific title.”
