What Makes a Great Keynote Speaker?

Brought to you by Chris Meroff:

Keynote speakers are typically important speakers who are usually seen at national political conventions and in many different conferences that people attend. Keynote speakers bring a higher level of professionalism to events.

Here are some key factors that make a keynote speaker effective at any event:

1. Purpose Not Promotion

It’s crucial that the keynote speaker understands the overall purpose of the event where they’ll present. In other words, it’s important that the keynote speaker’s focus is on solely the purpose of the event rather than focusing the entire speech on themselves. This will help keep the audience engaged and focused on the main reason why they’re all there in the first place.

2. Preparation

Keynote speakers need to know the value of entertaining people. It’s important that they add humor and/or stories into their speech to keep the audience’s attention.

They should also be prepared so they don’t look like they just made a complete speech up while talking to everyone. Properly presenting humor and short stories here and there will keep your audience engaged and entertained throughout the entire speech.

3. Pacing

Every keynote speaker should know how to properly pace their words and presentation. A keynote speech usually lasts for approximately 45 minutes, which is the perfect amount of time to share substantive content. It’s also the perfect amount of time to keep the audience engaged without losing them throughout the speech.

A professional keynote speaker knows how to pace themselves so they’re neither talking s0 slowly that the audience becomes bored nor so fast that it becomes hard to understand them.

4. Personalization

Keynote speakers need to be able to personalize the event with real stories that have happened to them. Therefore, the keynote speaker must prepare in advance so he or she has the most appropriate stories ready for each specific event.

Personalizing the event by sharing real stories that have happened to him or her will make the audience feel more connected to the speaker. Of course, the best keynote speakers don’t spend too much on their personal stories. Instead, they get to the point and then move to the next story.

Keynote speakers should provide the audience with methods and techniques that they can incorporate into their personal or business lives. A good keynote speaker leaves an impact and a clear direction of what audience members should do next.

5. Practice

Finally, good keynote speaker practice before they go on stage. Not only do they practice their presentations, but they also practice speaking to a wide range of audiences.
