9 Things Hiring Managers Want Job Candidates to Do During Interviews

October 3, 2012 By Susan Gunelius

NEWS AND INSIGHTS UPDATE:

Want to increase your chances of landing your next job? If so, you need to give the person interviewing you what they want during the interview. Keep in mind, what they want and think is important might not be the same thing as what you want to give them and think is important.

Jeff Haden of Inc. shares nine things hiring managers want job candidates to do and say during interviews. Add these nine things into your interview behaviors and conversations, and you’ll have a significantly better chance of getting an offer.

  1. Be likable.
  2. Don’t say you want the job right away. Wait until you know all the details.
  3. Stand out from other candidates and be memorable.
  4. Don’t be memorable for the wrong things. Negativity is easily remembered but it’s also deadly.
  5. Ask a lot of questions about what really matters to you.
  6. Only ask questions related to the job and the work. Save HR-related questions and questions that are more personal and less professional for later conversations after an offer has been extended to you.
  7. Bring a “project” to the interview showing that you’re ready to dive in and hit the ground running.
  8. Ask for the job and tell the interviewer why you want the job and why you’re right for the job. Sell yourself and prove yourself.
  9. Follow up and be genuine about it.
