July ADP National Employment Report Released

August 9, 2008 By Susan Gunelius

Last week, ADP Employer Services released the July ADP National Employment Report and the ADP Small Business Report, which showed significant employment gains among small businesses during the month. That’s good news following the weakest month for employment growth among small businesses in seven years in June.

In July, small businesses (those with fewer than 50 workers) added 50,000 jobs up from a gain of only 7,000 jobs in June. These small business results came entirely from the service-providing sector which added 56,000 small business jobs, offsetting the 6,000 jobs lost in the goods-producing sector.

Other groups didn’t do as well as small businesses. Non-farm private employment highlights for the month of July 2008 are as follows:

  • Total employment up 9,000 jobs
  • Small businesses (49 or fewer employees) up 50,000 jobs
  • Medium businesses (50-499 employees) down 9,000 jobs
  • Large businesses (500 or more employees) down 32,000 jobs
  • Goods-producing sector down 65,000 jobs
  • Service-providing sector up 74,000 jobs
  • Manufacturing industry down 49,000 jobs

According to these results, it looks like small businesses and the services sector are the places to be!

What do you think of these results?
