NEWS AND INSIGHTS UPDATE:

Women make up half of the total workforce in the United States, but they make up only 25% of the workers in the technology industry and hold just 15% of senior management positions. Julie Kantor, co-founder of Barrel of Jobs, shared those statistics from an Inc.com report in a recent article she wrote for Venture Beat.

Julie also shared advice from a number of female tech company founders to inspire, motivate, and challenge women who are considering careers in tech or starting their own tech companies. Some of those quotes follow:

Melissa Tyree, co-founder and CIO of Itography: “Don’t be afraid to fail. Do things that scare and challenge you and you will never be bored.”

Courtney Titus, co-founder and CMO of GivingTrax: “, if you’re in college. Find great mentors. Try and try again; don’t give up.”

Anna Anisin, CEO of 4sync: “No matter what career you pick, it’s very important to work hard and never stop believing in yourself. It is also very helpful to find one or two solid mentors, who can guide you and also brainstorm with you.”

Rebecca Bahr, co-founder of Flinja: “My advice to all girls thinking of going into technology is to never lose hope and never get intimidated by others. Technology can be fun, creative and challenging, but its not an easy journey so don’t give up.”

Catherine Spence, co-founder of HireQ.com: “What works for you might not work for your best girlfriend. But challenges do not need to be constraints. We are empowered by choices, to construct our lives and our careers based on our values, hopes, and dreams. My advice is to accept the challenge of dreaming big and making choices.”
